Waiting for Google Android in Canada
I currently don't have a smartphone. I almost made the transition when I had to replace my cell phone last year. But I wasn't compelled to take on the added expense given the current features and data plan pricing. I want a device with WiFi support so I don't have to eat up my data plan. But when I do need my data plan, it should be affordable and meet my needs.
The iPhone is a great product, but I'm not keen on letting Apple control our destiny with their closed, proprietary business model. Also, I'm a Bell Mobility customer, not a Rogers customer.
I'm sticking with Bell so I can roam on the dominant Aliant network when I'm in the Maritimes. So I'm hoping that Bell gets on the Android bandwagon ASAP.
Others have predicted that we won't see Android devices until the new wireless providers come online and should build their networks around this more modern technology. Although, with the economic crisis yet to peak, who knows when we'll see them.
When they do arrive, it will surely force the existing providers to match their pricing and features. But given that Bell, Rogers and Telus have acquired their fair share of the new spectrum, competitive data plans should finally be a reality in Canada.
Strong high speed networks + affordable pricing + Google Android = Happy Customer.
iPhone
I'm a Mac guy located in the US so the iPhone fits my bill. The data plans up north are a bit pricier than we have, and the 3-year contract is a little harder to swallow than the 2-years we have to sign for. The smartphone technology gets even more exciting every day, so good luck jumping on when you do!
I miss my US cell phone plan
I don't mind the 3 year contract. But I feel embarrased, almost ashamed of our wireless rate plans in Canada. We're probably 5 years behind you guys. Way to go Bell and Rogers. How are Canadians supposed to build great wireless applications?
